TO mark Merchant Navy Day members of the Alcester Branch of the Royal British Legion will be showing their support by holding a flag raising ceremony.

For the first time, the branch is inviting current and ex-members of the Merchant Navy to join them on Thursday, September 3 at St Nicholas Church Green at 10.45am ready to raise the official Red Ensign flag at 11am.

The event will remember and thank those who have served in the service and especially in war zones.

Alcester Town Councillor Mark Cargill, who served in the merchant navy for 11 years, has been asked to conduct the ceremony.

Councillor Cargill said he was proud to have been asked and hoped the ceremony would become a regular event.

Secretary of Alcester Royal British Legion David Malin said: “Although this is a annual event nationally, we have never officially organised an event in the town.

“We are aware that there are many veterans of the Merchant Navy living in the Alcester area and we thought it only right that we help them mark the occasion properly.”
