POLICE called to a main road on the outskirts of Redditch near midnight last September found a 34-year-old man in a drunken stupor, Worcester Crown Court was told.

When they searched Darren Griffin they found a small amount of cannabis but when they went to his home the next day, a major cache of drugs was discovered, said Charles Hamer, prosecuting.

Three bags of white powder turned out to be amphetamine and there were also quantities of cocaine worth thousands of pounds.

There were also scales, a cannabis grinder and other items used in the drug trade.

Griffin, aged 34, of Winyates Centre in Redditch, pleaded guilty to having the drugs with intent to supply. He was jailed for 16 months.

The court heard that he had previous convictions for drug offences and burglary.

In 2012 he had been jailed for 28 months for offences involving drugs worth £37,000.

Richard Davenport, mitigating, said Griffin had immediately admitted his drug habit and maintained that he sold drugs to fund his lifestyle. But he was not a commercial drug dealer.

He had never had the benefit of treatment for his drug habit, which he began at 18.

But he had the offer of a job when he had completed his sentence.

Judge Michael Cullum said it was clear that Griffin was making money out of drug dealing but to his credit he had handed over £735 to police when he was arrested.
