TWO scout leaders from Redditch and Alcester are representing the UK at the World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

Chris Thompson, aged 18, from Redditch, and Barry Catton, from Oversley Green near Alcester, will be meeting people from all over the world at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree.

The pair have joined the International Service Team (IST), a group of 6,000 volunteers who work as instructors, doctors or catering staff during the event.

The celebration, held in Kirarahama, Yamaguchi City, is expected to be attended by about 30,000 young people.

Mr Thompson said: "I am looking forward to sampling the culture and food in Tokyo. I went to Sweden in 2011 as a participant and I wanted to give something back. I am excited and happy about going and meeting so many people."

Mr Catton said he was "buzzing" with excitement.

"I have never been to a Jamboree before so wanted to take the opportunity to go to this one. I’m looking forward to the cultural experience and international friendship," He added.

Chief scout Bear Grylls said: “While lots of people know that scouting is all about adventure, they often don’t realise that adult volunteers get to do just as much as our young members through their involvement.

"The World Scout Jamboree is a great example of this. Over the course of the jamboree scouts will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light.

"That is why scouting is one of the greatest youth movement on earth and why I am so proud to be part of it."

The event is being held until Saturday, August 8.
