AN Alcester town councillor has been elected as chairman of Stratford-on-Avon District Council.

Councillor Mike Gittus, aged 61, the previous deputy chairman of the council, was confirmed in the role during the annual meeting held on Wednesday, May 20.

The previous chairman was Councillor Simon Jackson who retired from the council.

During his term of office Cllr Jackson raised almost £8,250 for his chairman’s charities, the Beauchamp Chapel Restoration Campaign and the Compton Verney branch of Riding for the Disabled.

During the meeting, Mr Gittus named his chosen charities for his term in office.

These were Alcester Dementia Café, Stratford Cancer and Eye Hospital £1 million appeal.

Cllr Gittus said: “Many thanks to many people, and my family. With my wife Di at my side I will do my best to undertake the role of chairman with diligence and enthusiasm.

Cllr Gittus worked for the Lancashire Constabulary police force specialising in Road Traffic Policing.

He has been an Alcester Town Councillor for many years as well as serving councillor for Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Warwickshire County Council.

During the meeting Councillor Sue Adams was appointed as vice-chairman of the council.
