A VERY special Redditch woman has received her British Empire Award medal from the Lord-Lieutenant of Worcester, Lt Col Patrick Holcroft, at a ceremony at the Guildhall Worcester.

Elaine Daykin, of Oakenshaw, has devoted her life to helping people with special needs achieve sporting glory.

As support worker for Mencap, she was inspired to set up Special Olympics Redditch in 1993 in response to the lack of after school activities or community support for children and adults with special needs.

Special Olympics Redditch is a fully voluntary group which provides year round sports training and competition opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

For 20 years as secretary and coach she has operated training sessions for participants enabling them to remain fit and healthy. Many of those she has helped have gone on to compete at local, national and international events.

Over the years she has raised in excess of £250k from events she has organised to help Special Olympics Redditch to survive and to pursue its goal of giving those who may be less fortunate an opportunity to be socially included and take part in sport.

Mrs Daykin has made a real impact on the lives of others; acting as a positive role model, counsellor and mentor; ensuring that everyone is treated equally and determined to raise the standard of their lives.

When news of her award was announced earlier this year, Mrs Daykin said it was overwhelming, exciting, and a complete honour.
