DOG walkers and ramblers will now benefit from easier green space access after a brand new gate was installed in Brockhill.

The new gateway, which provides access to a popular dog walking field off Brockhill Lane, means there are now two entrances to the field, one on Brockhill Lane and one off Plumstead Close.

For a long time residents used the nearby service gate to enter the field, which opens directly onto the busy and narrow Brockhill Lane. In order to establish suitable access into the large public open space area, a more formal entrance has now been created.

Plans for the new gateway were approved by district and county councillors earlier this year. It has also been approved by the relevant highway officer and is aimed at making the site safely accessible from a road that has no pedestrian footway. The new gateway also links with the existing pathway infrastructure on the other side of Brockhill Lane.

The new access point has sturdy handrails and steps up to the field as well as the gate opening inwards to avoid risk of injury to the public.

Councillor Pattie Hill, ward member for Batchley and Brockhill, said: “Residents have been asking for a new access point to be put in for a long time - especially after a resident injured their fingers - and I am thrilled that it has finally happened.

“I raised the issue at local PACT and Brockhill residents meetings, asked dog walkers for their opinions and walked the area with environmental officers to see what could be done.

“I would always advise using the access on Plumstead Close as this is set away from the busy lane, however, I know many people used to climb over the service gate which is very dangerous, so I’m glad that a more practical solution has been put in place."
