MORE than 500 miles, six tubs of chamois cream, countless toilet stops, one broken bike and a broken car later and Jonjo Rooney completed his latest fundraiser, an epic cycle ride to Germany.

The former St Augustine's pupil, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in December 2006, made the emotional trip to meet his bone marrow donor Andreas, the person who saved his life.

After the diagnosis, and despite enduring months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, Jonjo needed to have a stem cell transplant to save his life.

In July 2007, a stem cell donor match was found in Hamelin, Germany, following a worldwide search by the Anthony Nolan charity.

The transplant went ahead at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

He responded well and the 30-year-old has now been in remission for seven years, during which time he has become an active fundraiser.

Jonjo started his cycle challenge, from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham to Hamelin in Germany, on September 6 and arrived at his destination the following Saturday, September 13, a little tired, taned but looking forward to finally saying thank you to the man who saved his life.

It was a tearful meeting which Jonjo described as both surreal and joyous.

As well as meeting his donor, he was raising money for blood cancer charities Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Anthony Nolan and Bpositive - the charity Jonjo set up to help bring together those affected by acute leukaemia.

Meanwhile, Jonjo has been short-listed to the final three people of the TalkTalk Digital Hero for Fundraising 2014 through his work with the charity.

Since forming Bpositive its digital presence has developed significantly, with the website hosting an online community where patients, friends and families can share their thoughts, feelings and offer support to those in need.

Picked from hundreds of entries all across the UK, Jonjo now has the chance to be named Fundraising Digital Hero at the House of Commons before an esteemed judging panel.

As a category winner he could claim a £5,000 grant and be in with a chance to scoop the title of TalkTalk Digital Hero 2014 and £10,000 of funding.

Voting closes Thursday, September 25.
