WEST Mercia Police, Warwickshire Police, HMRC and the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are running a joint agency operation today at Hopwood Services, near Redditch, on the M42/A441 Worcestershire to carry out checks regarding the carriage of dangerous goods as part of a nationwide initiative.

Specialist units involving police officers, HMRC personnel and DVSA officers will be involved in the initiative.

The operation aims to improve the safety of our roads and offers an opportunity to pro-actively prevent and detect crime across the area.  The initiative will focus on the carriage of dangerous goods, un-roadworthy vehicles and traffic offences and will also focus on targeting criminals who use the road network.

Sergeant Stuart Allen from the Operational Policing Unit at Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police said: "Joint agency operations such as this one provide a highly visible deterrent to motorists who believe they can use the roads illegally and get away with it. As well as carrying out road safety education, officers will be issuing fixed penalty notices and processing on-the-spot fines for un-roadworthy vehicles and other motoring offences.

"We will continue to work with our partners to improve road safety and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads."
