A TRIO of speech and language therapists working in Worcestershire are saddling up to raise money for children who have problems with communication.

Emela Milne, Liz Chatterton and Katie Watson will be cycling 55 miles from Tenbury to Bretforton near Evesham this Friday, September 5, as part of Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust’s get Worcestershire Talking campaign.

The campaign, which is run by the trust’s Speech and Language Therapy service, is working to raise awareness of the needs of children who suffer problems with their speech, language or communication.

The team is hoping to raise £500 for a new library of games and resources that families can borrow and play at home to develop children’s communication skills.

Mrs Milne said improving a child’s communications skills could have an extremely positive impact on their later life.

“There is no better predictor of a child’s GCSE results at 16 than their vocabulary at five,” she said.

“That’s why it is so crucial to help these children develop their talking skills not only at school but also at home."

The team will set off from Tenbury Primary School in Bromyard Road at 9.15am and are planning to reach the trust’s headquarters at Issac Maddox House in Shrub Hill Road, Worcester, at lunchtime.

They will then move on to St Barnabas First and Middle School in Drakes Broughton, before finishing their journey at the Fleece Inn in Bretforton by 5pm.
