A REDDITCH man has stepped down from being a volunteer mentor with children's charity Mentor Link after five years, and praised the work of the charity which operates in many Redditch schools.

The charity supports young people on a one-to-one in school, when they are facing difficulties, and aims to improve self- confidence, attendance and engagement in learning.

Derek Styler has dedicated time each week to support local boys at Ipsley CE RSA Academy.

He said: "During my time I have shared my hobbies with the lads, and they with me.

"At times this year I have had some rather profound discussions and realised that if adults listen to youngsters, they have a lot to offer, and indeed have given me lots to think about.

"The school staff were always friendly and helpful towards me and I firmly believe in the youngsters of today, and in the turmoil of the modern world sometimes, some of them need unconditional guidance, which is where Mentor Link plays it's part.

"I would recommend anyone that thinks that they have anything to offer to young people to try mentoring.”
