ASSEMBLIES will never seem the same again for the pupils of St Augustine’s Catholic High School after they were serenaded by one of Britain’s biggest pop stars - Pixie Lott.

The singer, best known for her smash hit, All About Tonight, surprised more than 500 pupils when she emerged from the wings and took to the stage in the school's theatre.

The 23-year-old sang a selection of songs including her recent single Nasty and new single Lay Me Down - which students were invited to join in with after she taught them the chorus.

she was also there to promote heart scans and the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity (CRY).

The pop princess became a patron of CRY almost four years ago following the sudden death of a friend, Adam Donnelly.

Since then she has been a proactive supporter of the charity and its work to reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in young people.

Pixie said: "I became a patron of CRY as it affects so many young people and it’s crazy that a seemingly fit and young person can just drop down dead.

"I feel it’s so important to raise awareness and will continue to use my role as patron to help spread the word about the charity’s vital work.”

St Augustine’s principal, Anthony Quinn, said: "Our students and staff were delighted to welcome Pixie Lott, and Stevie Rennie from CRY, to the school School to talk about their work and to promote heart screening in young people.

"The School has already raised funds for Redditch Heartsafe and we have a defibrillator in school along with a team of staff who are defibrillator trained to stand aside our many first aiders.

"Monies raised from a school musical event will be given to CRY and a cheque was presented by our catering providers Aspens for £800."

He added: "Many thanks to Pixie and Stevie for raising further student awareness about cardiac risk in the young."
