A YOUNG woman was faced with ‘every woman’s nightmare’ when a burglar walked into her bedroom in the middle of the night and, instead of fleeing, grabbed out at her.

Commenting that she was ‘fit,’ intruder Haroon Hussain (25) of Parsons Road, Redditch, grabbed at the victim's pyjama bottoms as she frantically shouted and banged for help on the wall of her home.

Hussain fled, but was caught nearby, and at Warwick Crown Court he was given an extended jail sentence of six years and two months, followed by an additional five years on licence.

Although he had already pleaded guilty to burgling the house in Studley, Hussain only admitted sexually assaulting the woman on the day of his trial.

Prosecutor Sarah Allen said that in September last year the victim, who was in her 20’s, had forgotten to lock the back door of her Studley home before going to bed.

At some time after 2am she was woken by a noise on the landing and noticed a light going on in another room.

When she then saw the defendant in her bedroom doorway and the light go on, the terrified young woman jumped up onto the bed shouting at him: “What are you doing here?”

Rather than turning and leaving on realising there was someone at home, Hussain moved forward and onto the bed where he grabbed her pyjama bottoms, telling her: “You’re fit, you are.”

His victim frantically banged on the wall, shouting to the man next-door for help, at which Hussain let go, pulled up his hood and ran from the room and out of the house.

The man next door arrived while his wife called the police, and he and the young woman went into the street where Hussain had discarded property he had stolen as he fled.

They saw Hussain further down the road, and the man held on to him until the police arrived to arrest him.

Hussain entered his pleas on the basis that he had not gone into the house to sexually assault his victim, but to steal.

But Miss Allen observed: “While it may not have been his intent to sexually assault this girl, to have someone going into her bedroom at night and making a lunge towards her must have been terrifying.”

And Judge Alan Parker commented: “It’s every woman’s nightmare. He had the opportunity to run away, but did not and went towards her and touched her in a sexual way. It could not be more serious.”

Gurdeep Singh Garcha, defending, said: “He has clearly expressed his regret, and he has not sought to make excuses.”

He said Hussain, whose offending had been underpinned by alcohol, was drunk that night and, having fallen out with his cousin, was looking for somewhere to sleep before then deciding to steal from the house once he was inside.

The judge, who described the incident as ‘profoundly disturbing, said he considered Hussain, who will have to register as a sex offender for life, a danger to the public.
