A REDDITCH midwife has been shortlisted for a top regional award.
Barbara Kavanagh, leader of the Redditch community midwives, has been shortlisted for the NHS Community Leader of the Year Award.
NHS Health Education West Midlands is holding regional heats for the national NHS Leadership Recognition awards. Ms Kavanagh, who has been a midwife for 35 years, has made it into the top three in her category.
She has been invited, along with her colleagues, to a red carpet event on November 6, where she will find out if she has won the prestigious award.
She has been leading the team in Redditch for more than 10 years, and in that time has dramatically improved the way they work and enhanced the care they provide to women and their families.
Over the last few years she has introduced a new home delivery support group and a bespoke home delivery box, which provides women with all the essentials they need to prepare for a home birth, at a much cheaper cost to Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
She has paved the way for women to have direct, early access to a midwife.
Ms Kavanagh said: “I work with some fantastic midwives. They are all professional, hardworking and very committed to their women and families.
“I see my role as looking after my midwives and I know in turn they look after each other, but the most important thing is that they look after their women and families.
“The local care they provide is first class. I love my job and am very proud to lead such a great team.”
Patti Paine, head of midwifery at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said: “I’m so proud of everything Barbara has done for women in Redditch, she is truly a great role model for all her staff.”
