Theatre groups team up to celebrate Palace centenary
10:30am Thursday 29th August 2013 in Local
FIVE community theatre companies from around Redditch are teaming up to create a celebratory show for the centenary of the Palace Theatre.
Redditch Operatic Society , Astwood Bank Operatic Society, Studley Operatic Society and Alcester Musical Theatre Company will be performing along with youth drama group The Harlequins, in a full day of celebrations in Redditch, hosted by television personality Don McClean.
Each theatre company is planning to cover 20 years of the theatre’s history from its opening in 1913, with the last 20 years covered by the Harlequins to represent the future of theatre in the area.
Redditch councillor Phil Mould, portfolio holder for leisure and tourism, said: “Imagine all the performances that this stage has seen over 100 years and all the people that have taken part. These days about 10,000 people a year are involved in putting on shows at the Palace, whether they’re set building, making costumes, playing instruments or acting, and at least five times that many people come here to see the shows.
“The Palace Theatre continues to span the generations and this centenary celebration show will highlight its history and shine a light on its future.”
The Centenary Celebration Show starts at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 7. Tickets are £12 from the box office on 01527 65203 or at redditchpalacetheatre.co.uk.
