Bipolar man who threatened person with a knife must get medical help, judge says
1:30pm Thursday 15th August 2013 in Local
A REDDITCH man who threatened another man with a knife in the street has been told he needs medical help if he wants to avoid prison.
Valdis Zagorskis, aged 40, of Exhall Close, Redditch, pleaded guilty to having a knife in Barnwood Close on March 7, and to affray by using violent or threatening behaviour.
Worcester Crown Court heard on Tuesday, August 13, that Zagorskis suffers from bipolar disorder.
In giving an indication of the sentence he could expect, Judge Robert Juckes QC said he would consider a suspended prison sentence if the right support package and medical assistance could be organised.
"I have seen cases time and again where people with bipolar disorder start to feel better, and stop taking their medication as they feel it is holding them back, and it can cause problems like this," he told the hearing.
Zagorskis was remanded in custody while pre-sentence reports are drawn up. He will return to court on August 30.
