The meeting of S.H.A.R.E members at Arrow Valley Park in Redditch

IT is hard to imagine that there is an issue with abandoned and mistreated huskies in Redditch, but the problem is apparently escalating, and one group is determined to put a stop to it.

S.H.A.R.E Rescue (Siberian Husky Aid, Rescue & Education) is a national organisation which has many members in Redditch.

Although huskies are affectionate animals, many end up in rescue centres through no fault of their own, as when people buy them as puppies, they do not research them thoroughly and realise that these pack dogs are very different from other dog breeds.

A few husky owners in the Redditch area, most of whom are members of the S.H.A.R.E forum page on Facebook, meet up at Arrow Valley Park, and the group is now growing and attracting people from further afield.

Member Sonia Johnston, from Redditch, said: “There is a real problem with abandoned huskies, and ones which are being mistreated as their owners just simply didn’t realise what looking after an adult husky would entail.

“We are hoping to raise people’s awareness of this, and the need for both foster and adoptive homes for these wonderful dogs. And for those who would like to help but cannot foster or adopt, there is always the option to sponsor or donate.”

Ms Johnston and her partner have two huskies, one of which they originally fostered from S.H.A.R.E, and ended up adopting. They also assist with the organisation’s home checks and help the rescue in whatever way they can.

There will be a meeting of husky fans at Arrow Valley Park visitors centre on Sunday, December 30 at 11am. Everyone is welcome to attend to find out more, whether they have a husky or not.

There will be leaflets on S.H.A.R.E and merchandise available.
