Redditch's MP "honoured" to be elected to sit on Transport Select Committee
10:10am Friday 26th October 2012 in Local
REDDITCH’S MP Karen Lumley has been elected by fellow MPs to sit on the Transport Select Committee (TSC).
The TSC will be a particularly vital committee in the coming months, with transport infrastructure projects such as the High Speed 2 (HS2), the proposed new high speed rail network, directly affecting the West Midlands and the nations’ future economic prosperity.
In addition, an inquiry is currently being undertaken on the future of the UK’s future aviation strategy, also vital for the Britain’s future economic competitiveness.
Mrs Lumley said: “I am both pleased and honoured to have been elected by fellow members to sit on the TSC at such an important time.
“The TSC is currently taking decisions on some monumental proposals which will be vital for Britain’s future economic competitiveness.
“I have been very clear that I am supportive of the HS2 project which I believe will create jobs for people in Redditch and help businesses throughout the West Midlands. History has shown that countries’ who invest in transport infrastructure during difficult times are more likely to bounce back both quicker and stronger.
“I am also strongly in favour of ensuring that Birmingham, which is currently running well below its full capacity, is upgraded to become a hub airport.
“I believe that with the current dilemma over whether the UK should build a third runway, Birmingham Airport is in a strong position to take on more passengers and I will be looking to promote this as a new member of the TSC.”
