On Saturday, August 3, Worcestershire County Council's Archive and Archaeology Service is inviting walkers to its history-themed walk around the old Worcester city boundary.

Walkpast will start at 2pm and take approximately three hours. Participants should wear suitable footwear. The event is organised by the service as part of a series of six walks around the county.

Walkpast is a series of walks which has been taking place for 25 years. Led by county archaeologists, the series focuses on the archaeology and history of an area and is aimed at everyone.

The Augsut 3 walk will be tracing the description of the route in a document dating back to 1497, found in the Worcester City Collection in The Hive.

Back then members of the City Corporation would officially walk around the boundary to check everything was correct. The document says that they should not wear armour or carry weapons, although they are allowed to take a stout staff. Some places are familiar, such as the Commandery and Pitchcroft, whilst others, such as Cutthroat Lane, have changed.

Justin Hughes, project officer, said: "When we came across this document in the archives we thought this would be a great walk in our Walkpast series. We will be following in the footsteps of our medieval ancestors, who would walk this route every year as part of a tradition, and visitors can learn more about our city in this period."

Places cost £6 each and need to be booked in advance. Please reserve your place hiveadminteam@worcestershire.gov.uk or ring 01905 766352 for more information.
