KIDDERMINSTER law firm mfg Solicitors has agreed to support a promising event rider who competes in events across the UK.

Sophie Smyth, who is also carving out a career in the corporate and commercial team at the legal practice, will now be draped in the firm’s distinctive black and orange colours as she rides her eight-year-old horse Mr Percival in horse trials.

The 32-year-old from Cleobury Mortimer, who was one of the winners at last year’s prestigious Royal Windsor Horse Show, has been riding since she was three and hopes that mfg’s support can help push her on as she establishes her name in the sport.

She said: “Percy used to show jump with his previous owner but he’s had to learn a lot of new skills to take part in eventing. But we both enjoy the jumping and get a great buzz from it.

“I’ve ridden since I was young and my father is a commentator having previously competed internationally. Horses have always been a big part of our family so I’m delighted that mfg has agreed to sponsor me and Percy. This will help us to train up and really show what we can do.”

Next up for Sophie and Mr Percival will be a high-profile event at Gatcombe Park, the Cotswolds home of HRH The Princess Royal.

Justin Parker, partner and head of the commercial team at mfg Solicitors, added: “Sophie is building quite a name for herself in eventing. We wanted to support her by providing sponsorship and are delighted to be playing a part in her ongoing success.”

Earlier this year the mum of one also scooped a top 10 finish at the Solihull Horse Trials and competed at the Homme House event near Ledbury.

At work, Sophie has recently completed her first year examinations to become a legal executive lawyer. Her links with the equine and farming communities are deep-rooted with her grandfather Tim Dwerryhouse once being a well known vet practicing in Cleobury Mortimer.

mfg’s commercial division works closely the firm’s renowned agricultural team on a range of matters including new business set ups, diversification, equine businesses and renewable projects.
