FORMER nuns' cells are set to be transformed as part of a multi-milion pounds project to be carried out by the Kidderminster-based team of construction company Stepnell.

The 90 cells at the 19th century Grade II Stanbrook Abbey, at Callow End, near Worcester, will be converted into 52 luxury en-suite bedrooms and suites.

The abbey, a former Benedictine monastery featuring the designs of E W Pugin, has was reopened as a weddings, conferences and corporate events venue in 2012 by AmaZing Venues, part of the Clarenco Group, which has a portfolio of iconic and unusual properties across the UK.

The project, designed by Kidderminster-based architects Howl Associates, will also include a major new stone-clad extension to the abbey’s north wing to create a new reception area, bar and an enlarged, double-height banqueting space.

A new gated entrance has been created for guests within the walled grounds of the abbey, which is set in 21 acres of countryside. The latest phase of work is set to be completed by November.

“We are proud to have been chosen by AmaZing Venues to work on this unique and historic building, which has been transformed into a world-class wedding and conference venue and are delighted to be playing our part by undertaking this latest phase of redevelopment,” said Stepnell director Richard Wakeford.

“We share the dedication of Clarenco (AmaZing Venues) to exceptional service and we are committed to delivering the very highest standards of craftsmanship drawing on our expertise in working on historic properties.”
