So it seems that at the moment being 'indie' is extremely cool. It's taken me a while to decide what I think of this. The people who came up with this term really are bright sparks to name a type of clothing something... and then all wear it then making it no more individual than a navy blue Jack Wills gilet. (They say one in three teenagers will own one at some point and half of the remainder will buy a rip off version. Sad times readers, sad times).

If you've never seen someone who considers themselves 'indie' look out for skinny black, navy, dark or acid wash jeans, tank tops or vests, multi-coloured cardigans and moccasins or brogues. It's not that RT doesn't like the clothes or being independent, it's just how easily some people are misled into thinking that they decided what to wear of their own accord.

High up in Vogue towers someone somewhere will have made the decision to bring the Christmas jumper back into fashion. That will have filtered through to high end designers who will have incorporated that into their designs and therefore buyers for high street shops will have bought in bulk a design of Christmas jumpers. Obviously this won't all happen at the same time for every shop so the first few of every year who seize one from a shop and start wearing it become 'indie'.

The general mood of the indie fashion genre is recycling clothes and wearing lots of different fashions all from the 20th century but subtly all together. 40s shoes and 70s jumpers worn together is alright, RT can work with that, it just puts me on the turn when people think they were the ones who decided what to wear.

When you pick out your clothes, it's not you deciding you like that skirt and top together, it's the result of you being told by magazines and the media that it's good to wear that combination. Everyone likes to be in fashion and that goes the same with being 'indie'. Someone somewhere has decided to stock up on that stuff and made you believe that you should be wearing it.

'Indie' just means you got your Christmas jumper before the girl you sit next to in Science.
