In Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, when Lady Bracknell during the process of interrogating Jack asks him if he smokes he answers with the affirmative. This, she is very pleased with and follows it saying that 'every man should have an occupation'. This leads one to infer that actually, back then smoking was expected of a man.

RT knows that The Importance of Being Earnest was a long time ago but it shows how far we've come. Back then smoking was expected for a gentleman and now, well, it's not.

For some reason it seems that people think its fine to throw a cigarette end onto the floor and put it out with their foot. Is it?

On Christmas Eve, RT and Older Sister were shopping in Kidderminster and while waiting at the bus stop outside the town hall saw a middle aged man throw his fag end on the floor and not even put it out with his foot. RT had a right mind to go and pick it up right in front of him and put it in the bin, which sat 2 feet away.

Held back by Older Sister (who said it would be really embarrassing- RT wouldn't have cared), we continued to wait for the bus, which subsequently didn't come.

Is it just RT or is this wrong? I think that throwing a cigarette end on the floor is just the same as a burger box. It doesn't biodegrade quickly and makes the place look a mess. RT's got friends who smoke, this isn't a rant about smoking. It's about what one does with the cigarette when it's finished.

Don't mean to sound like a crank but just wondering if it's just me...
