School gets new sixth form centre

A NEW state-of-the-art sixth form centre is set to be built at St Benedict’s Catholic High School in Alcester.

The work is planned to start in April 2010 and will be completed in time for the first students in September 2011.

The centre will accommodate up to 200 students in years 12 and 13, with students being drawn from other local schools as well as those staying on from St Benedict’s lower school.

The core of sixth form provision will be the International Baccalaureate Programme, which leads to a qualification widely recognised and highly acclaimed by many universities.

Mike Gittus, Warwickshire County Councillor and mayor of Alcester, said: “St Benedict’s is already a centre of educational excellence and the addition of a sixth form at the school will allow it to continue its commitment to providing a good education to its pupils.

“The International Baccalaureate Diploma is a fabulous qualification, internationally accepted as the educational benchmark for university entrance.”

Councillor Izzi Seccombe, the county council’s portfolio holder for children young people and families, said: “St Benedict’s is an outstanding school and well placed to deliver this alternative and wide based curriculum offer, to run alongside the superb offer of education currently provided to its school community.”
