THE grandson of former Alcester Town Council clerk Derrick Ward has organised a sponsored walk around Oversley in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
Derrick Ward died in March after suffering a heart attack and his grandson, Toby Russell, 13, wanted to do something to honour the man who had served as the council's clerk for 43 years.
"We used to go on family walks with my granddad around Oversley and so it will be a nice way to remember him," said Toby.
"Raising money for the British Heart Foundation will be a good way to do something in his memory and to help other people suffering from the same thing.
"We were very close and I just wanted to do something."
Toby organised the walk with his friend James Reeves from school and had to fill out a form from the BHF about organising a third party charity event.
"I've made up sponsorship forms and have been telling all my friends and family about it, trying to make sure people know about what's happening," he added.
Toby told his mum he would be organising the walk and she told him he would have to call the BHF, but he had already called and sorted everything out.
"I'm very proud of him," said mum Rachel.
"I think it's really good that someone so young has organised this and all my friends and family will be coming."
As well as his council duties, Mr Ward acted as registrar for births, deaths and marriages and was a hugely popular figure in the town.
The walk starts at 1pm on Saturday, July 5 at 2 Old Stratford Road, Oversley Green. All are welcome to take part.
