THE Roman soldier Titus Flavius Juistus paid a visit to the Roman Alcester Museum to talk about life when Rome ruled most of the country, almost 2,000 years ago.

Dressed in the armour of a Roman legionary, he taught children Roman military drill and gave them the chance to dress up in Roman armour, carry a shield and learn about the hardships of life in the legion.

"Titus was a great success with the children and he soon had them marching up and down and shouting battle cries in Latin," said Mick Parker, summer events organiser at the museum.

More than 50 children and their parents attended the event, which was one of a series of days taking place at the museum especially designed for youngsters.

There will be a chance to discover the bloodier side of Roman life on Saturday, July 5 when a Roman surgeon visits the museum to talk about how they dealt with wounds, boils and blisters.

Kids will be able to try their hands at the Roman crafts and activities there from 10am-4pm.
