AN 88-YEAR-OLD suffered lacerations and bruising after being hit by a car while walking to the chip shop.

The woman's daughter says she fears her mum could have been killed in the incident and has called for council action.

Monica McCann was crossing Tower Hill road in Bidford when she was clipped by the vehicle on Friday night (September 30).

She was walking into the village to 'treat herself' to fish and chips when she was struck by the car.

The pensioner moved into her little bungalow, in Crompton Avenue, two years ago, after concerns were raised about her living in London.

Janet Ford, who is Ms McCann's daughter and lives in Stratford, said: "The car of young lads stopped after they hit her. I'm assuming that they were inexperienced drivers.

"They are supposed to slow down there. It sounds like they tried to avoid her by swerving and clipped her. I think if they hadn't done that she would have been dead.

"She lived in a very busy place before and we moved her up here thinking things were going to be safer and she gets knocked down. I couldn't believe it.

"It seems like a very dangerous crossing. It's a very straight road so there's automatic feeling for some drivers to put their foot down.

"I have crossed the road several times with my mum and you do have to be careful. There's always one driver that wants to zoom through.

"She fell down like a tonne of bricks. Something needs to be done. A crossing needs to be there."

Ms Ford, 54, who owns a museum, said her mum had 'the stuffing knocked out of her' and is still feels queasy from shock.

The ambulance service contacted Ms Ford through her mum's record and took the pensioner to Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

Daren Pemberton, district councillor for Bidford East, said: "First of all I hope she's on the mend.

"There's some concern about traffic through the village. It's clear people are not adhering to the limit.

"Me and county councillor Mike Brain are keen to find ways to reduce the speeds.

"Now I've had this drawn to my attention, it's something I will take to the police."

Cllr Pemberton said the police have been using average speed cameras in rural areas and floated the idea of putting some in Bidford.

However county councillor Mike Brain warned that cameras unfortunately do not stop speeding vehicles.

"The volume of traffic is going up with developments going up," he added.

The councillor says he will discuss the matter further with cllr Pemberton to work out a solution.
