COUNCILLORS and residents have been left stunned over plans to demolish a historic jewel in Alcester’s skyline.

Plans were recently submitted to Stratford District Council to demolish Oversley Castle located on the border of Wixford and Alcester.

Warwickshire County Councillor, ward member for Alcester, Mike Gittus said: "This 'folly' castle, which has an interesting history, is an attractive and important part of our local identity.

"The impact on the landscape from the local area and in particular Ragley Hall would be severely affected should this building be allowed to be demolished

"Such an application is unthinkable and I will do all I can to prevent the demolition of this important and iconic structure."

Under planning laws, the applicant does not need permission to demolish the building, however they are required to inform the local authority so they can decided if approval is needed for the way the demolition takes place and any proposed restoration of the site.

Sue Adams, chairman for Stratford District Council and ward member for Alcester and Rural, said: "It is very upsetting that the building is going to be demolished. It is a site that can be seen for miles around.

"It has been there for as long as I have live here. I am very upset with the way it has been done.

"It would have been good to know what it is going to be replaced with. A lot of people are concerned. It will be really upsetting if we lose the tower.

Oversley Castle, whose history dates back to the time of King Offa of Mercia, is well-known for its views across seven counties.

The demolition has been scheduled to take place between August 31 and September 30, with plans for re-development on the cards.

The applicant was unable to comment before the Advertiser’s deadline.
