THE sun shone and at least 1,500 people turned out for the second Olympics Fun Day in Alcester on Saturday.

There were fears the event would have been a washout due to heavy rain but the temperature rose and the sun came out – just in time for the festivities on Jubilee Recreation Ground to begin.

Event organiser and town councillor Mike Gittus said: "With heavy rain forecast on Saturday it was a worrying time for the organisers.

"But Alcester need not have worried as the temperatures rose and the sun did a good job to shine as the music and sports continued all day and late into the night.

"During the day it seemed as if the whole of Alcester came to support the event.

"Probably at least 1,500 to 2,000 people throughout the day. I was a great event, a huge success."

The event featured an official opening ceremony for the new £80,000 skate park with town mayor Chris Brannigan cutting the ribbon along with free music, entertainment and sporting events.

The fun day aimed to get the community to celebrate and share in the excitement of the Rio 2016 Olympics, due to take place next month.

There were performances from The Alcester Junior Drama Group and Alcester Rock Academy and local rock band Monkey Jam headlined the event.

Cllr Gittus added: "There was a real Party in the Park atmosphere, with live music, sports, local organisations and stalls.

"Truly there was something for everybody and many families set up camp for the entire day."
