TWO kind-hearted Alcester Town Councillors have donated £1,000 to the Aylesford Unit at Warwick Hospital.

Councillors Clive Neal-Sturgess, who hung up his mayoral chains in May, chose the specialist cancer unit as his 'Mayor's charity' after being diagnosed with cancer shortly before taking office.

He said: "Being diagnosed with cancer was the worst day of my life but the care I have received at the Aylesford Unit has been fantastic."

Councillor Lennox Cumberbatch, a former mayor himself, is also receiving treatment for cancer.

He said: "My own treatment at the unit has been ongoing for many months. The doctors, nurses, and all staff here have been tremendous, helpful, caring and prepared at all times to offer a significant amount of support to both service users and carers. What a team.”

Cllr Cumberbatch and Alcester Town Crier David Parkes held a gentlemen’s dinner with former Arsenal, Celtic and Wales striker John Hartson as a special guest speaker.

Having himself beat cancer, Mr Hartson donated two signed shirts to be auctioned at the event.

Some £500 of the money raised from the dinner was donated to the unit.

The funds will be put toward a new scalp cooling machine for the unit which can help reduce hair loss caused by chemotherapy.
