ALCESTER saw the return of the thrilling Midland Open Tug of War Championships on Sunday, May 8.

A total of 60 teams from all over England met on the Jubilee Fields to weigh in for the men's competition and women’s and youth events.

Members of the Alcester community,who helped organise the event, raised nearly £350 to support local good causes and associations.

Event organiser county councillor Mike Gittus said: "Sunday was the hottest day this year and Alcester provided a scorching venue on the restful Jubilee Fields, by the side of the ancient River Arrow. This was a fine location for one of the most ancient of team sports taking place where without doubt the Roman occupants of Alcester will have fought for supremacy."

Winners in the Midland Championship are as follows: 600 kilo competition Bosley (Cheshire) runner up Lincoln, 640 kilo competition Norton (Staffordshire) runner up Lincoln, 680 kilo competition Norton runner up Felton Eccles (Somerset).

AAA Championship Results Catchweight competition winners were Lincoln, 640 kilo competition Norton (Staffordshire) runners up Two Dales (Derbyshire).

Youth and ladies league results: 520 kilo league six teams winners Gloucester Boys, runners up Upton on Severn with Bedford Ladies in third place. 560 kilo League five teams winners were Gloucester Boys, runners up Upton on Severn, Bedford Ladies in third place.
