ATHLETIC residents are being urged to lace up their running shoes and take part in Alcester’s Steeple Chase.

The event will see sporty participants walk, run or ride a bike five, 10 or 20 miles passed the eight churches in Alcester’s historical minster trail.

Alcester’s St Nicholas’ Church is the lead church of the set forming Alcester Minster Churches.

An urgent appeal to restore St Nicholas’ Church was recently launched after an architect found stonework on all four external walls and its tower were in need of restoration, costing at least £250,000.

Leader of church restoration team across the Alcester Minster of Churches Nick Moon said: "We need to raise £250,000 to be able to carry out this work and by participating in the Alcester Minster Steeple Chase you will be helping us to carry out the necessary restoration of the building.

"Enjoy the event and thank you for your support."

The event is being held on Monday, May 30, starting at St Nicholas’ Church with all proceeds going towards the church's restoration.

Refreshments, free t-shirt and medals will be available.

Tickets cost £25 for a family (two adults and two children) adult £15 and children £8.

So far more than £20,000 has been raised towards the refurbishment costs and the restoration fund committee are currently liaising with English Heritage in the hopes of securing further financial aid.

The 12 century church boasts a tower dating back to the 14 century.
