AT least £300 was raised towards the restoration of St Nicholas’ Church following the construction of giant Scalextric track inside the historic building.

A 21-meter track saw 70 participants battling it out for prizes during the eight two hour sessions, which ran between Thursday, February 18 and Saturday, February 20.

An urgent appeal to restore St Nicholas’ Church was launched after an architect found stonework on all four external walls and its tower were in need of restoration, costing at least £200,000.

So far more than £20,000 has been raised towards the refurbishment costs and the restoration fund committee are currently liaising with English Heritage in the hopes of securing further financial aid.

Chairman of the restoration fund committee Mike Newey, who organised the event, said: "It was hard work but it was great."

He added that although some cars would need to be repair due to the action they endured over the weekend, organisers hoped to hold a similar event soon.
