A STUDENT at Wootton Wawen CE Primary School has been shortlisted in a nation letter writing competition.

Caris Baughan, aged 10, proved she was made of the write stuff when she penned her entry to Royal Mail’s Young Letter Writer of the Year Competition.

Her letter wowed in the regional under 11s category and it will now go on to UK-wide final competing against 24 other entries.

Royal Mail received 100,000 entries nationally by children aged four to 14 in response to the question "What is your dream job?".

Caris’ letter was about her wish to be the next presenter on BBC Radio’s Just a Minute programme.

Caris told the Advertiser: "I am stunned that I have made it this far in the competition and I hope the judges like the letter I gave them."

She won £400 in vouchers to be split equally between herself and her school.

Submissions were assessed by a panel of regional judges on a range of criteria, including correct letter layout, word count, good use of vocabulary, accurate grammar, punctuation, originality and well-constructed sentences.

West Midlands regional judges described Caris’ letter as "brilliant, slightly bonkers, yet totally entertaining."

Regional judge and children’s author Clare Bell, said: "This is written by a talented communicator, who seems destined to succeed Sir Nicholas Parsons as the presenter of Just a Minute."
