PEOPLE in Alcester and the surrounding district are being invited to attend a special Alcester Refugee Fund meeting with MP Nadhim Zahawi.

Group founder Frank Wood will be giving an illustrated talk on his recent visit with a Christian charity to refugee camps in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Speaking on his trip, Mr Wood said: "They were very welcoming, very pleased to see us. They didn’t ask for any favours, they understood we were just there to hear their stories.

He added: "There were people from all of sorts of jobs, a dentist for example- they are stuck in this camp with no idea how long they have been there and they would probably be there another two or three years with their lives on hold."

Alcester MP Mr Zahawi will be giving an overall assessment of the Middle East crisis.

Mr Zahawi was born in Baghdad to Kurdish parents before fleeing with his family to the UK during Saddam Hussein's rise to power.

The meeting will finish will a question and answer session.

The event, on Friday, January 29 at 7.30 pm at Alcester Town Hall, is free to attend but a collection will be taken and all donations will be gratefully received.

Refreshments will be available in the interval.
