ALCESTER was bursting with festive spirit last weekend when the town held its annual St Nicholas Night celebrations.

Hundreds of people turned out for the traditional event, held every December 6, to celebrate Saint Nicholas, known as the bringer of gifts.

About 40 stalls selling a wide range of food and gifts, and representing many of the town’s organisations, lined Alcester High Street.

Youngsters from two local schools, Alcester Academy, St Nicholas' CE Primary School and Alcester Silver Victoria Band performed on the Church Green.

Fireworks filled the skies around Alcester and members of the community gathered in the town's main church, named after the saint, for a short compline service.

Following tradition, George Wren, aged 10, a pupil at St Nicholas' CE Primary School, was appointed as boy Bishop of Alcester, representing St Nicholas as part of the celebrations.

The youngster took part in a parade around Alcester accompanied by vintage vehicles and representatives from many of the town’s organisations.

Event organiser Andy Mitchell, chairman of the St Nicholas Night Association, said: “I think it was the best turn out we’ve ever had- probably because it was a weekend.

“A brilliant afternoon, it was lovely.”

He added that due to the event's popularity, organisers would look at possibly closing the road to vehicles during next year's celebration.
