THE transformation of a popular Alcester town asset is now more than halfway complete.

Globe House, in Priory Road, is to form a cultural hub where many of the town's assets will be available under one roof including the library and the Roman Alcester Museum.

Over the past two months contractors have stripped out old offices, the building has been rewired and internal structural work has been taking place.

The next phase of the project will see replacement ceilings, floors, electrics and new data systems installed.

Designers are creating a modern space for visitors to access digital services and learning.

Representatives from Warwickshire County Council, Alcester Town Council and Alcester’s Roman Museum visited the site recently.

Warwickshire County Councillor Mike Gittus said: “As its name Globe House suggests, the building spans a wide range of services from one place and I am pleased we have been able to improve and safeguard this cornerstone of the local community.

“As well as offering local people a more convenient, joined-up facility Globe House is making public money work more efficiently- rather than two public buildings being maintained just a few hundred yards from each other, we are bringing an excellent range of services together.”

David Moulson MBE, of Alcester’s Roman Museum, added: “We are delighted to be working with the library and town council to offer enhanced learning, cultural and heritage opportunities for the benefit of local people and to attract more visitors to the town through a new and exciting programme of events.”

The decision to move the present library into the hub, which is on the same street, was made at a Warwickshire County Council meeting held on Tuesday, May 19.

The proceeds from the current library building, once sold, will be used to meet the cost of the revamp.

Recently, Warwickshire County Council agreed to enter a 99-year lease for the building, securing its future.

Globe House is expected to reopen in early Spring 2016.
