HUNDREDS of people assembled in Alcester High Street on Sunday to pay tribute to those who died fighting for their country.

A parade to mark Remembrance Sunday saw current and former service men and woman, alongside members of Alcester's Royal British Legion and numerous other organisations march from Bleachfield Street, through High Street and to St Nicholas' Church.

A two-minutes silence was held at 11am, wreaths were laid at Alcester War Memorial and a service was held at the church.

Alcester South Safer Neighbourhood Team took part in the Remembrance Day parade and a wreath was laid by beat manager PC Pete Essex on behalf on Alcester Police.

Alcester Royal British Secretary and Poppy Appeal Organiser David Malin said: “There were more people in the parade this year.

“The town’s people are always very good, they managed to line the High Street this time- right from the start of the parade to the church.

“That is a very good turnout.”

Speaking on the Poppy Appeal fundraising, he added: “Our poppy shop in High Street raised £2,000. We are well within reaching our target.”

On Saturday, the annual festival of remembrance concert, held at the Greig Centre, featuring Alcester Male Voice Choir, Alcester Victoria Silver Band and other solo artists raised more than £1,000 towards the Poppy Appeal.
