A SPEED camera, located between Alcester and Studley, has seen the amount of drivers committing offences almost half in the last four years.

The statistics, released by West Mercia and Warwickshire Police under a Freedom of Information request, show that some 6,796 drivers were caught speeding in 2010 northbound on the A435 Alcester Road near Kings Coughton.

Last year 3,854 were snapped and this year so far just 3,211. Over five years 22 casualties were recorded and 14 accidents. This year had the largest amount of casualties- which was six.

A spokesman from the Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia said: "While it is encouraging to see this figure falling, there is still an unacceptable amount of motorists breaking the clearly-marked speed limit.

"Alcester Road is one of our core speed enforcement sites where there is a history of speed-related collisions and casualties.

"It is a clearly marked speed enforcement site and the activity there aims to reduce speeds and improve the safety of the road for everyone who uses it."

County councillor Mike Gittus, who is also an Alcester town councillor and a Straford district councillor, said: "It is an extremely dangerous piece of road.

"The single point residents in Kinwarton and Kings Coughton will tell me is that vehicles are driving too fast across the length of the A435."

He added that he and Studley councillor Clive Rickhards were working with Warwickshire County Council towards reclassifying the road as the B435 instead to make it less attractive to lorries and other trade vehicles.
