A HISTORICAL Alcester street has been named as one of Britain’s best in the Sunday People newspaper.
Malt Mill Lane won the regional prize in David Domoney’s gardening segment, Cultivation Street, which aimed to find the country’s best streets, demonstrating community spirit and pride.
Residents in the area began growing plants outside their homes to improve the lane’s look and this quickly turned into a community project.
The neighbours work together to raise funds to pay for hanging baskets and the general upkeep of the area.
Secretary Beryl Lammas, of Colebrook Close, said: "We are really excited that we won the £500 and we are really over the moon."
Mrs Lammas thanked Maggie Payne, chairman of Alcester In Bloom, for putting the street forward for the award.
In the segment, Mr Domoney describes the street as a “Picture postcard street with planted containers that fill areas where there are no gardens, lining the street with beautiful displays.”
The street received £500 worth of National Garden Gift Vouchers and residents will decide what spend the vouchers on at their next meeting.
The market town attracts tourists from far and wide many of which walk down the popular lane.
