POLICE have launched an investigation into the Bidford Bridge crash last month.

The inquiry by Warwickshire Police aims to establish circumstances behind the incident which seriously damaged the stone parapet, spandrel wall and central pier of the ancient monument.

A crop sprayer collided with the bridge on June 9 and following the incident the bridge was closed to drivers. It is anticipated repairs will take up to six months to complete.

Inspector Julia Brealey, for South Warwickshire Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Following our initial enquiries into last month's collision, the decision has been made for an investigation to be carried out to further ascertain the circumstances behind the collision.”

The closure of bridge on Honeybourne Road has forced drivers to take detours and businesses nearby the bridge have expressed concerns.

The bridge has now been reopened to pedestrians and cyclists but a date has not been set for when it will be open to vehicles.

The council has told residents it is doing all it can to minimise the disruption by providing extra parking and signs which indicate that businesses are open as usual.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101.
