More than 10,000 people attended the Hollywood themed Alcester Street Market held in the High Street at the weekend.

The event, arranged by the Court Leet on Sunday, June 14, saw visitors wearing fancy dress, with prizes for the best costumes and shop windows on view and musical entertainment provided by Alcester Victoria Silver Band, the town's male voice choir and Alcester Academy’s Rock Academy.

Best shop window, judged by rector of Alcester Minster Reverend Adrian Guthrie and Pastor Martin Mills from the Baptist church, went to The Shakespeare Hospice who created a New York skyline out of video cassettes.

The winner of best stall was chosen by Professor Clive Neal-Sturgess, the new mayor of Alcester, and his wife Elle, and this went to Alcester Academy with the Court Leet in second place.

High Bailiff Vaughan Blake: “The street was heaving from about 12 o’ clock till about six or seven.

“It was a huge success. We hope to raise a considerable amount for local causes. Everybody had a lot of fun.”

So far the event has raised around £2,000 for the High Bailiff's charity fund.

Sunday's event also saw a new Guinness World Record for the longest bowling run-up in a cricket match. The 1.6 mile record set by Jason Rawson in Blackburn was beaten by Ian Biddle who ran two miles from Alcester Town Hall to Ragley Estate to deliver the opening ball at a charity cricket match.
