FOR the fifth time prams and buggies lined Alcester High Street for the annual charity pram race.

The event sees competitors darting around the streets and pubs of Alcester with their prams for two local causes.

The event on Sunday, May 24 raised £430 which will be split between Alcester Children's Activities and St Nicholas Church Restoration Fund.

This year hundreds of people turned out to the event with 10 prams and 42 people completing the race which included a 5km course visiting 14 venues and ringing the bells at St Nicholas' Church.

The prize for the fastest team went to the Awesome Foursome and the Old Codgers achieved best fancy dress.

The Royal Oak pub scooped two awards for their team, Star Oak, heaviest baby and best pram.

Each year, the event is arranged by Sharon Walker and David Lloyd, from the White Lion pub in Alcester, with help from Marc Venables.

Ms Walker said: “it was a fantastic day biggest turn out ever. All the pubs were really accommodating to us."

Sunday’s race will be the last organised by pair from the White Lion as they are moving house.

She added: "This annual fundraiser has been one of the most enjoyable ones out of all our charity efforts over the last 10 years and we hope it will carry on when we move up north."

"We are leaving but we hope the town will continue it on. We don’t know who will take over the pub but we hope they will continue with it.

Mr Venables said: “It was a brilliant race very competitive up front of the field.

"I am overwhelmed by the response from everyone and the effort put into prams and costumes makes it that little bit more special.”
