A HAPPY couple are set to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary this week.

John and Edna Huxley, of Meadow Road, will be celebrating their 60th anniversary on Thursday, March 26.

Edna met John at her parents’ house when she was just 17. At the time John, 20, was helping the baker to deliver bread.

Edna, now aged 82, said: “He went into the RAF and we met up after he came out of that. That was when we started going out.”

They were married at Old Yardley Church, near Birmingham, in 1955.

Later in life they spent seven years living in Australia where Edna worked as a hospital secretary.

When they came back to the UK in 1977 they moved to Alcester.

They were both employed on the Arden Forest industrial estate with John working at Smith Brother & Webb.

When asked the secret to a happy marriage Edna joked that it was for the men to do as they are told.

She added “No, I think it’s a case of give a take. You may not agree with it but you go along with it.”

John, aged 85, said: “Give and take you see. We have had good times and we’ve had bad times. We have two good kids and lovely grandchildren and a great grandchild. We are happy.”

The couple have two children, Lisa Fitzgerald and Gary Huxley, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Daughter Lisa will be taking them out for a meal to celebrate the occasion but John added that they hoped to visit their family, who live in Australia, at the end of the year.
