A COUPLE from Cookhill, near Alcester, were killed after the light aircraft they were travelling in came down near Popham Airfield in Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis Tonkinson, 50, and his wife Sally Tonkinson, 44, were with their son George, aged six, at the time of the crash.

George was left with life-threatening injuries and taken to Southampton General following the crash.

On Sunday, a Hampshire Police spokesman said: "Police remain at the scene whilst the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) carries out an assessment. It's believed the aircraft will be removed from the site later.

"Enquiries have revealed that the aircraft took off from Bembridge on the Isle of Wight yesterday afternoon."

She added that post mortems were due to be carried out on Tuesday to establish an exact cause of death.
