HUNDREDS of people gathered in Alcester to take part in the annual New Year’s Day Croome and West Warwickshire Hunt.

Around 70 horses, followed by hounds, rode in to the town on Thursday, December 1 where they were greeted by almost 800 supporters.

In the past, the event has faced some conflict from anti-hunting demonstrators however this year’s event remained peaceful but with the police on hand to help manage the road closures.

Mr Ben Skilbeck, master and huntsman, said: "As a hunt, we have attracted over 3,500 members of the public at this and other high profile meets over the Christmas period.

"The anger felt within the countryside over the hunting ban seems revitalised, I put this down to the 10 year anniversary this February combined with another chance to exercise our democratic right this May."

Alcester Court Leet assisted the Croome and West Warwickshire Hunt by helping to close the roads and inviting the hunt to meet at the town hall.

They also offered each of the riders a stirrup cup of port, a traditional gesture often given to guests when they due to leave and have their feet in stirrups.

Mrs Charlotte Key, chairman of Croome Hunt Supporters Club, said:"It was very peaceful this year. It was a huge success and we had a lot of support.

We had a lovely time, my daughter and her two friends stayed until the end. There were about 70 people on horses, the crowds were so big. It is generally really big, all the town seems to turn out to show their support."
