ALCESTER Bridge Club held its sixth annual Ada Hampton Memorial Evening on Friday, October 28.

The event marks the death of a much-loved bridge player who died in October 2008, just three days after she had last played bridge at the club and six days after her 100th birthday.

Jean Underwood, chairman of Alcester Bridge Club, had been one of Ada’s bridge playing partners for a number of years before her death.

Mrs Underwood said: “She was an excellent bridge player, a feisty lady she was known in bridge circles throughout the area. She is remembered by so many people.”

She added that as her last memory of Ada was buying yellow roses for her 100th birthday, she now continues to buy two bouquets each year, for the winners of the memorial evening’s contest.

Joe White, member of Alcester Bridge Club, said: “Ada Hampton was a truly remarkable lady, she had very good card skills and was able to switch to a different convention system to be able to play with Jean.

“Her determination to play was never more clearly demonstrated than on 24th October 2008 when she really struggled with the stairs at the Alcester Conservative club, which was our venue at that time.

“It was the only time that any of us had played bridge with a centenarian.”

This year’s victors were Andrew Hughes and Andy Blundell who are also the first all male pairing to win the contest.
