ALCESTER Rugby Club will be hosting a charity tournament against a team of ex members of the armed forces to raise vital funds for Help for Heroes and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Last year the club held a similar charity match raising £8,000 but this year hope to surpass that by holding the event over two days – with Alcester playing the ex members of the armed forces at the club's grounds on Saturday, April 26 and the annual seven-a-side tournament taking place on Sunday.

Alcester Rugby Football Club coach Paul Ashford said: “Just because we have left the forces doesn’t mean we don’t care about those injured and their families.

"Help for Heroes and Macmillan Cancer care charities are close to everyone’s heart and this event is a great opportunity to get involved and help support two great causes.

“They say that you only get out of life what you put into it and last year’s event was a great success, with people from all walks of life and age groups working together with a common aim.”

Gates will open at 11am on Saturday with a junior exhibition game taking place before the main match which kicks off at  around 1.30pm. Registration for Sunday's match will start at 10.30am with the first game scheduled to start at noon.

The Saturday match will be a part of a day of fundraising, which will include a barbecue, raffle, band and other attractions as well as a disco at 7pm.

Entrance is free but donations are welcome and there is a £5 players’ entry fee with all money raised going to charity.
