A VOLUNTEER helper at The ExtraCare Charitable Trust’s Terryspring Court retirement scheme in Smallwood, Redditch, has raised money to buy equipment for the scheme’s gym by doing a sponsored cycle run.

Richard Clarke, aged 43, who lives in the Winyates West area of Redditch, covered more than 30 miles calling en route at non-league football clubs in the region, and has already collected over £100 and expects more to come in.

He says watching Team GB’s cyclists taking part in the Olympics had inspired him to take up cycling again.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying it and impressed by the way people have sponsored me,” he added.

When Mr Clarke arrived at the scheme after cycling round clubs in Studley, Alvechurch, Bromsgrove and finally, Redditch United’s ground, he was greeted  by residents and staff who gave him a rousing welcome and showered him in Grand Prix style with a bottle of bubbly.

Mr Clarke has been a  social health care volunteer at the scheme for  seven years.

Activities co-ordinator Jan Little from Terry Spring Court, said: “We are amazed by Richard’s contribution over the last seven years. His motivation never ceases to impress us and we are particularly pleased with his sponsored ride.”

If anyone would like to boost his sponsorship fund, they can call in at Terryspring Court in West Avenue, Smallwood.
