MORE than £1,000 has been raised for charity Help for Heroes thanks to the initiative of local soldiers.

While on a training exercise near Leeds members of 37 Signal Regiment, a TA Royal Signals Regiment based in Redditch, were surprised with a new mission.

Thinking they were just going hill walking they were given 36 hours to complete a series of tasks, including getting as much cash as possible for the charity.

Other tasks included wangling a test drive in the most expensive car they could find and having a drink in the oldest pub in Harrogate.

The challenge was designed to improve initiative and confidence amongst the soldiers.

£1,070 was raised for Help for Heroes which will go toward helping those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts.
