MOTORCYCLE, scooter and moped riders are still over-represented in terms of the numbers of serious injuries and loss of life on our roads.

Although motorcyclists are not always at fault, the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia continues to offer a skills enhancement course at a significantly reduced cost. The Take Control scheme aims to help bikers of all abilities improve their riding skills, machine control, threat perceptions and spacial awareness.

Take Control is in its fourth year and all training is now provided by RMT Motorcycle Training based in Redditch and Tyseley. Director of RMT, Simon Hayes, said: “No one likes to be told they would benefit from training, but Take Control is intended to develop skills beyond the quite basic requirements of passing your test.

“A large part of what we focus on is helping to see the dangers early, avoiding them safely and enjoying the ride; after all, it is supposed to be fun.

“Experienced riders can practice advanced riding techniques whilst polishing out the bad habits that we all develop over time and new riders can learn a lot and build confidence in just a few hours.”

Take Control is currently available to all motorcyclists who live in Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire. Full motorcycle licence holders have a full day on offer at just £50 - less than a third of the typical cost. New and young riders taking the next step after passing there CBT pay a subsidised rate of just £25 for a three hour session.

Every session is personalised to the needs of each biker and no test is involved. The instructors can also start at convenient meeting points across the three counties.
